Inside a Bespoke Jacket

A bespoke jacket is often described by its details. At TIE MEN, it begins somewhere else: with the person who will wear it.

Tailor’s shears cutting cloth along chalk lines

It starts with a person, not a style

It is tempting to think of a jacket as a list of choices — a lapel, a set of pockets, a cloth. Those choices matter, and they have their place. But a bespoke jacket does not begin with them. The first conversation is about the occasion ahead and how you like to dress: the life the jacket will be part of, and the way you move through a day.

Measurements, and what lies around them

Your measurements are taken individually, with attention to your proportions and the fit you want to achieve. They are not numbers alone: they are the record of one body, and the foundation of everything that follows.

Numbers cannot describe a person on their own, so your cutter also studies your posture and stance — how you prefer to stand, sit and move. Two people with the same chest measurement can carry a jacket very differently.

A pattern drafted for one person

From those measurements, a paper pattern is drafted for you alone — a blueprint that exists for no one else. It is not a standard size adjusted at the edges, but a set of shapes drawn for one frame. One Body, One Pattern follows that sheet of brown paper more closely.

Chalk and shears

The pattern is laid on the cloth you chose and chalked around by hand, with checks and stripes taken into account. Then the cloth is cut by shears — the true beginning of your garment, and the moment after which a line can no longer simply be redrawn. That is why the stages before it are given care.

Refined on the body

A cut jacket is not yet a finished one. It is refined on your body at each fitting, and how many fittings a piece needs depends on the piece, its design, what you ask of it and how it settles on you. The tailor studies the shoulders, the balance of the fronts and the fall of the back until the silhouette settles balanced and natural. The First Fitting looks at that moment in detail.

Finishing, with restraint

Buttons, lapels, the final stitches — they are executed with thoughtful restraint, so every detail settles into the whole rather than competing for attention. Choosing them is less a matter of adding than of editing, which is the subject of The Details That Make It Yours.

The wearer before the jacket

When a bespoke jacket is right, people rarely notice the jacket first. They notice the person wearing it: the line of the shoulders, the ease of movement, a sense that garment and body agree. Everything inside the jacket — the measurements, the pattern, the chalk lines, the fitting — is there so that the wearer is seen before the jacket.
